Movie theater update

Here's the latest on the Hyattsville Royale 14 movie theater... the current plans are for it to be ready for the opening of the new "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie, which would be around May 25. The theater will be the first retail establishment to open on America Boulevard, with restaurants to follow throughout the summer.

Plaza Lofts update from the Post

There is an interesting article in today's Washington Post about Plaza Lofts, specifically about the unique zinc walls:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/04/08/AR2007040800904.html

Definitely required reading for future residents who want to be able to explain it to their guests. I think it's going to look fantastic, and I'm pleased that the developers are making this type of investment to ensure the building looks just as fantastic for many years to come. According to the article, a zinc wall can last for 100 years and can "heal itself when scratched, like human skin."

Other interesting tidbits for future UTC residents:

About 80 percent of the Plaza Lofts units are already sold, which means only about 5 units remain.

The installation of the zinc walls will take a crew of eight about two months, and they plan to begin "in coming weeks". I'll try to get some photos of the installation. In the meantime, check out the wall-less photos from last weekend on the photos page at http://www.utcliving.com/photos.cfm.

Hip Lofts to Bring Glimmer of Zinc to Hyattsville

Plaza Lofts Twenty-Two "is one of the first residential buildings in the Washington region to install walls made of zinc, a metal that industry experts say is emerging nationwide as a desirable alternative to traditional materials such as copper or less expensive masonry."

Hyattsville Royale 14 rumor

Great news from Greg at WhyHyattsville.com--rumor has it the new Royale 14 movie theater will be open in time for Spiderman 3 to come out.

http://whyhyattsville.typepad.com/why_hyattsville_real_esta/2007/03/university_town.html

Spiderman 3 is scheduled to be released on May 4... less than a month away! I stopped by UTC this afternoon to check out the progress, and the latest photos of the future movie theater are below. To my untrained eye it doesn't seem like it will be ready for customers by May 4--maybe I should interpret this to mean the theater will be ready in time to show Spiderman later this summer, not necessarily as soon as it's released. Either way I'm excited about the progress. Whenever it's ready, and whatever movie is playing, I plan to be at the Royale 14 opening night.

Safe Cities Project proposal to target commercial areas

"A safety initiative that would include emergency call boxes for commercial areas and a Web-based crime alert system is being promoted by the City of Hyattsville's police chief and touted as a way to deter crime."

"University Town Center President Herschel Blumberg supports the initiative, telling council members his company has a 'strong commitment' to it."
